Korea Spring Flower Festival Guide: Lanterns, Tulips, Azaleas

Korea spring flower festival season runs the full month of April with simultaneous events nationwide, yet each “flower festival” has a completely different character. Yeondeunghoe, held around Buddha’s Birthday, is a religious and cultural celebration. Taean World Tulip Festival is a horticultural expo with one million blooms. Azalea festivals are nature events tied to mountain trekking. This guide sorts every Korea spring flower festival into three categories — religious, horticultural, and natural — and compares timing, transport, booking difficulty, and foreigner-friendliness side by side.

Korea Spring Flower Festival — Religious & Cultural: Yeondeunghoe (Jogyesa, Jongno)

Korea spring flower festival Yeondeunghoe — colorful lotus lanterns in a temple courtyard

Yeondeunghoe is Korea’s flagship Buddhist cultural event, held for about a week around Buddha’s Birthday in Seoul’s Jongno district. Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020, the festival fills the streets from Jogyesa Temple to Dongdaemun with vivid lotus lanterns. The headline “Lotus Lantern Parade” runs on the Saturday evening before Buddha’s Birthday and draws roughly 100,000 locals and international visitors along Jongno.

For first-time foreign visitors, the strongest recommendation is the Traditional Cultural Plaza near Jogyesa (open daily 13:00–22:00 during the festival). Lantern-making workshops, temple food tastings, and free hanbok rentals all happen in one place, making it easy to bring foreign friends along. Schedules and parade routes are announced each year on the official Yeondeunghoe site.

Korea Spring Flower Festival — Horticultural Expo: Taean World Tulip Festival

The Taean World Tulip Festival is a large-scale horticultural event held on Anmyeondo Island, Taean County (Chungcheongnam-do), for roughly three weeks from mid-April. Over one million tulips are planted across a 300,000-pyeong (about 99 ha) site, and international gardeners from the Netherlands, France, and the UK take part, giving the event genuine global scale. Admission is around KRW 13,000 for adults, and weekend afternoons regularly bring parking chaos — plan for a weekday morning or arrival before 9 a.m. on weekends.

It is about a two-hour drive from Seoul. By public transport, take an intercity bus to Taean from Incheon or Seoul Nambu Terminal, then transfer to the Anmyeondo shuttle. Independent foreign visitors are rare, so most signage is in Korean — request an English map at the information desk on arrival.

Korea Spring Flower Festival — Nature & Mountain Routes: Azalea, Sansuyu, Canola

Nature-leaning Korea spring flower festivals usually combine hiking or driving with the bloom. The main events to know:

  • Changnyeong Hwawangsan Azalea Festival (Gyeongnam Changnyeong, mid-April) — Stunning pink azalea fields near the Hwawangsan summit. Roughly a 2-hour hike.
  • Icheon Sansuyu Festival (Baeksa-myeon, Icheon, Gyeonggi, late March – early April) — A village event where entire neighborhoods turn yellow with cornel dogwood blossoms. Popular with families.
  • Jeju Canola Flower Festival (Gasiri, Seogwipo, Jeju, late March – mid April) — Canola fields in southeastern Jeju. Best enjoyed as a driving course.
  • Gurye Sansuyu Festival (Gurye, Jeollanam-do, mid-March – early April) — Cornel dogwood villages at the foot of Jirisan, paired with traditional medicinal tea tastings.

Korea Spring Flower Festival — Best Routes for Visiting With Foreign Friends

If you are bringing foreign friends or colleagues along, these two itineraries deliver the highest satisfaction.

City Day Route: Yeondeunghoe + Jongno Hanok Village

Arrive at Jongmyo Shrine at 11 a.m. → Korean lunch in Insadong → 2 p.m. lantern-making at the Jogyesa Traditional Cultural Plaza → 5 p.m. Cheonggyecheon lantern street → 7 p.m. Jongno Lotus Lantern Parade. The fastest way for a first-time foreign visitor to dive into Korean culture in a single day.

Nature 2-Day Route: Taean Tulips + Anmyeondo Pension

Day 1: arrive Anmyeondo at 9 a.m. → 4 hours at the tulip festival → afternoon walk along Anmyeondo Beach → overnight at a local pension. Day 2: Anmyeondo sand dunes + Sinduri Coastal Sand Dunes → return to Seoul. A balanced mix of nature, photography, and rest.

Korea Spring Flower Festival Booking Tips: Timing, Transport, Lodging

Spring blooms peak within a one- to two-week window, so check official festival sites for live bloom updates one or two weeks before departure. Weekend drives almost always run into traffic — take a weekday off, or default to KTX and intercity buses. Pensions in outlying areas such as Anmyeondo and Gurye routinely sell out one to two months ahead for April weekends, so lock in lodging the moment your dates are set.

Korea Spring Flower Festival: Pick One Theme and Go Deep

The biggest mistake during Korea spring flower festival season is trying to “see them all” and cramming the calendar. April peaks shift week by week, so chasing Jinhae cherry blossoms and Taean tulips on the same weekend is practically impossible. Choose the kind of scenery you love most — religious and cultural, horticultural expo, or mountain and nature — and immerse yourself in that season’s flagship event. The photos and memories will hit much harder.
