Jeonju night market location and operating info

Jeonju night market stalls scene

The Jeonju night market opens around the Hanok Village in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. Stalls stretch from the plaza in front of Gyeonggijeon along the alleys leading to Jeondong Cathedral, and on peak weekends the entire area around Girin-daero turns into a market floor. The season runs from April through October, with stalls opening at 7 p.m. and closing at 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On rainy days the number of stalls drops or operations are canceled, so check on-site conditions before heading out if rain is forecast.

How to get to Jeonju night market

FromHowTime
KTX Jeonju StationTaxi or bus 79 (get off at Jeonju Hanok Village)~15 min
Jeonju Express Bus TerminalTaxi or bus 5 (get off at Hanok Village entrance)~10 min
Private carHanok Village public lot (busy on weekend evenings)~5 min walk after parking

If you drive in, weekend evening parking competition is intense. Park before 5 p.m. or take public transit from the start. To plan a Hanok Village walking route alongside the market, also see the Jeonju Hanok Village course guide.

Signature foods of Jeonju night market

Jeonju night market street food scene

One reason Jeonju night market stands apart from other night markets is the high share of traditional foods. Snack-type and fusion items are there, but Jeonju-specific menus are clearly more prominent. Most prices fall between 3,000 and 8,000 KRW, and while card-accepting stalls are growing, having around 50,000 KRW in cash makes things easier.

  • Hanok Village king choco-pie — A large, crisp-baked choco-pie. Lines stretch the moment the market opens.
  • Jeonju chicken skewers — Thick marinated chicken grilled over open flame. Crisp outside, juicy inside.
  • Makgeolli and traditional liquor — Jeonju is the home of traditional Korean rice wine. The market offers many makgeolli varieties; comparing strengths and sweetness is part of the fun.
  • Bibimbap skewers — Jeonju bibimbap ingredients reimagined as a skewer, a market-only menu.
  • Fresh-fried twisted donuts (kkwabaegi) — Eat them hot. Even without sugar, they’re plenty good.
  • Omegi-tteok — A Jeju-origin rice cake that stays steadily popular here. Chewy texture and savory red bean paste pair well.

If it is your first visit to Jeonju night market, walk a full lap before buying. Buying at the first stall that catches your eye often means regretting it once you spot a better menu later with no stomach left.

Practical tips to enjoy Jeonju night market

Crowds at Jeonju night market on a weekend evening are heavy. After 8 p.m., the alleys themselves can clog up with people, so a few preparation points lift the experience noticeably.

Before you go

  • Arrive before 6:30 p.m. — The window just before opening is the calmest. Lock in must-try menus while lines are short.
  • Comfortable shoes — Hanok Village alleys are mostly stone-paved. Heels and flip-flops tire fast.
  • Small bag — A large backpack is a problem for both you and the people around you in the crowd.
  • Cash on hand — Many stalls still skip cards. About 50,000 KRW is more than enough for a full evening.

Efficient walking route

The most efficient route is to start at the front of Gyeonggijeon, head straight toward Jeondong Cathedral, and loop back through the side alleys. Only after one full loop does the layout of stalls click in your head. Walk slowly, compare prices and menus, then pick what you want. Plazas where buskers perform draw extra crowd, so if you plan to watch, claim a spot first.

Nearby attractions to pair with Jeonju night market

Since the Jeonju night market opens in the evening, hitting the main Hanok Village landmarks earlier in the day fills out the schedule nicely. To pair the cafe alleys, also see the Jeonju cafe alley course guide.

  • Gyeonggijeon — The Joseon-era shrine enshrining the portrait of King Taejo. Admission 3,000 KRW; the bamboo-grove path nearby is worth a walk.
  • Jeondong Cathedral — Honam region’s first Western-style cathedral, completed in 1914. After night lighting comes on, it becomes a photo spot.
  • Omokdae Pavilion — A hilltop pavilion with a sweeping view of the entire Hanok Village. Climb at sunset for the best light.
  • Jeonju Hyanggyo — A Goryeo-era educational institution. Quieter than the main areas, ideal for a slower walk.

If you plan to stay overnight in the Hanok Village, timing matters. Hanok guesthouses fill up fast on weekends, so book at least 2–3 weeks ahead. Prices range from around 20,000 KRW for a dorm bed to 150,000 KRW or more for a private hanok. For broader Korea travel info, see the Korea Tourism Organization.

Jeonju night market FAQ

When does Jeonju night market open?

April through October, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. On rainy days, operations may be reduced or canceled.

Can I see the night market in winter?

The regular night market closes for the season in October. Jeonju Hanok Village runs cultural events or special markets sporadically in winter, but it is not a regular operation. For visits after November, check Jeonju city official notices in advance.

Where do I park?

The Hanok Village public parking lot is closest, but the entry queue is long on weekend evenings. Either park before 5 p.m. or take KTX, bus, or taxi from the start.
