Suncheon Autumn Reed Sunset BEST 7: Wetland & Waon Beach Guide
Suncheon autumn reed sunset is a short, intense season — from September through November the tidal flats and reed fields glow gold for the last 1–2 hours of daylight. We picked seven spots where the light hits best: the Grass Garden lawn at Suncheonman Wetland, Yongsan Observatory, Waon Beach and Waon Park, Jukdobong Park and a bonus stop at Hwapo Beach. Routes, transit times, ticket cutoffs and the Suncheon City Combined Pass are all included so a first-time visitor can come home with the photos without wandering.

1) Grass Garden at Suncheonman Wetland — the No.1 reed photo spot
Your Suncheon autumn reed sunset trip starts at the Grass Garden lawn near the wetland entrance. Variegated reed and pampas grass are planted in clusters, and side-light between 3 and 5 pm makes them shimmer best. Foot traffic stays on the marked path, so a wide-angle and a standard lens are enough.

2) Yongsan Observatory — the textbook S-curve sunset frame
Yongsan Observatory overlooks the S-shaped waterway. The official “about 30 minutes” refers to the uphill walk from the Yongsan trail entrance, not from the wetland ticket gate. Allow extra time to cross the wetland, reach the hill and return before closure; ask staff about the route and sunset that day. Autumn admission ends at 18:00 in September–October and 17:00 in November–February.
3) Suncheon Bay National Garden — autumn color plus Sky Cube link
Visit the National Garden earlier if you also want Yongsan sunset. Sky Cube takes about 10 minutes between Garden Station and Suncheon Bay Station; adults pay KRW 8,000 return or KRW 6,000 one way, separately from attraction admission. Its ticket includes the reed train from Suncheon Bay Station toward Mujingyo (1.2km, about seven minutes). Check the last return and Monday closure rules before booking; a late sunset visit may need another way back.
4) Waon Beach — Tier-1 sea sunset behind Solseom Island
Waon Beach is the sea-sunset core of the Suncheon autumn reed sunset route. At low tide the mudflat opens wide and an S-curve water channel appears.
- Tip 1: Waon Beach changes completely with the tide (low/high).
- Tip 2: Arrive at least one hour early to claim your composition.
- Tip 3: Telephoto for Solseom; wide-angle for the mudflat lines.

5) Waon Park — easy parking, walk and sunset in one go
Waon Park, next to Waon Beach, is often more practical for sunset chasers. It has a wide parking lot, a walking path and a pavilion, and the path runs alongside reeds and the sea. The view across Solseom and Hwapo village is well-known at dusk, so the smoothest pattern is “wait at Waon Park, then move to Waon Beach as the sun drops.” Local information is on Suncheon City tourism; visitors from abroad may also like our 15 essential apps for foreigners in Korea.
6) Jukdobong Park — the “I’m late but want sunset” backup
If you arrive late or your schedule slips, an urban viewpoint saves the day. Jukdobong Park overlooks the Suncheon city center and pairs nicely with check-in plus a light walk and night view. Autumn sunset comes early, so a city spot is often the safer pick.
7) Hwapo Beach — bonus after-glow stop with Waon
Choose Hwapo or Waon as your main coastal sunset stop. They are in different parts of the bay, so do not count on a 10–15-minute transfer or catching the same short afterglow at both. Check the actual road route before leaving, or visit the other shore on a separate day. Remain on open shore paths rather than entering the mudflats in fading light.
Two Suncheon Autumn Reed Sunset route examples
A) “Just grab the light” half-day route
- 3–4 pm: Grass Garden at Suncheonman Wetland
- 60–90 min before sunset: start walking to Yongsan Observatory (hill section about 30 min; wetland approach extra)
- Sunset: catch the sun behind the reed field from Yongsan Observatory
- After sunset: return from Yongsan within the wetland’s closing time. Save Waon sunset for another day.
B) “Autumn scenery + sunset all-in” one-day route (recommended)
- 1–4 pm: walk the pink muhly and cosmos lines at Suncheon Bay National Garden
- Early afternoon: take Sky Cube after checking your reserved departure and return time; allow for queues and the onward hill walk.
- From Suncheon Bay Station: use the included reed train toward Mujingyo or the open walking route; this is not the full journey to Yongsan Observatory.
- Sunset: Yongsan Observatory inside the wetland
- Evening: leave the wetland on time and follow your preplanned return transport.
Money-saving tip: Suncheon City Combined Pass
The official wetland page lists a two-day city tourist pass at KRW 12,000 per adult for city attractions including the Garden, Wetland, Naganeupseong, drama set and Deep Rooted Tree Museum. Confirm the current covered venues before purchase. If you only visit the Garden and Wetland on the same day, the ordinary KRW 10,000 adult ticket already covers both; Sky Cube is extra. A pass is not automatically the cheapest choice.
Quick tips for foreign and first-time visitors
(Jukdobong Park)
- Useful phrases on site: “Is this the way to Yongsan Observatory for sunset?”, “Where is the Waon Beach sunset spot?”
- Admission: September–October until 18:00, visit ends 19:00; November–February until 17:00, visit ends 18:00. These later times are closing times, not last entry. Check closure notices and return before darkness.
- How to get there: KTX to Suncheon Station, then city bus or taxi to the wetland and the National Garden. A rental car makes pairing Waon and Hwapo easier.
