Sokcho 1 night 2 days itinerary, Day 1: market, beach, Daepo Port

1) Eat, shop, and pack at Sokcho Tourism Market (former Jungang Market)

The market locals call “Jungang Market” is officially listed as Sokcho Tourism Market (former Jungang Market). The address is 12 Jungang-ro 147beon-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. Operating hours are 08:00–24:00, although individual shops vary. The market combines a multi-story building (B1 through 2F) with alleyway stalls, and the basement has a sashimi center (회센터).

Market food is the real highlight of any Sokcho 1 night 2 days itinerary. Each alley specializes in a different dish, so decide what to eat before you walk in to avoid losing time in lines.

  • Dakgangjeong: An entire “chicken alley” exists inside the market — it is that famous.
  • Squid sundae and abai sundae: Two traditional dishes you will see in every Sokcho food guide.
  • Jeotgal, dried seafood and side dishes: Check each product’s storage instructions and use-by date. Salted or dried products are not automatically shelf-stable; buy refrigerated items only if you can keep them cold during transport.
  • Sashimi center: The basement sashimi center is a budget-friendly way to eat fresh fish on the spot.

Market parking and navigation tips

The market has its own large parking lot. According to the Sokcho City Facilities Management Corporation, the Sokcho Tourism Market large parking lot has its own distinct address — plug that into the navigation app to avoid the one-way streets downtown. If you are traveling with foreigners, search “속초관광수산시장” and “대포항” in Korean on Naver Map or KakaoMap for the cleanest routing. For the wider East Coast loop, also see the Gangneung and Sokcho road trip guide.

2) Sunset walk at Sokcho Beach

Sokcho Beach sits at 190 Haeoreum-ro, Sokcho-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It has been one of the East Coast’s signature beaches since it opened in 1976. Beach walking and designated swimming operations are different; follow seasonal swimming hours and any temporary access controls. The beach is roughly 5–10 minutes by car from the market — still inside the city, not in the outskirts.

Allow about an hour for a beach walk, with more or less time according to the weather. Stay on open pedestrian routes. Strong wind and high waves can make breakwaters dangerous; a windbreaker does not make a closed or exposed route safe.

  • Bus access: Routes 1, 1-1, 7, 7-1, 9, 9-1, and 93 are listed as reaching the beach.
  • Showers and lockers: In the open season, the Sokcho City Facilities Management Corporation charges usage fees.
  • Longer walking route: The Badahyanggiro coastal trail (about 1.74 km) runs from Sokcho Beach to Oeongchi Port.

3) Day 1 dinner: raw fish and seafood at Daepo Port

Daepo Port is at 64 Daepohang-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, generally accessible year-round, while restaurants keep their own hours. The port is lined with sashimi centers, a fritter alley (튀김 골목), and dried seafood shops, so dinner time is the most efficient slot. The standard way to eat sashimi here is to buy fish at the sashimi center and pay a small table fee at a second-floor sauce restaurant.

The Daepo district public parking lot offers the first 20 minutes free, with charges accruing in steps after that and a daily cap of about 10,000 KRW. Check your chosen restaurant’s opening hours and queue; port restaurants are not guaranteed to have shorter waits.

Sokcho 1 night 2 days itinerary, Day 2: sunrise, market wrap-up, packing

Best East Sea sunrise spot and timing

Sokcho Beach faces due east while still inside the city, which makes it a reliable sunrise spot. Arrive 30–40 minutes before sunrise and stand at the far end of the sand looking east for the cleanest composition. If you want to compare other East Sea sunrise locations, see the East Sea sunrise top 10 spots.

Final market shopping and Daepo Port takeout

Buy chilled market food near departure, following the seller’s storage instructions. Packing sashimi just before leaving does not guarantee safety for a long drive: keep it properly chilled and minimize travel time. If reliable cold storage is unavailable, eat sashimi at the restaurant and choose products suited to the journey home.

  • Ice packs and cooler bag: Mandatory for long-distance transport of sashimi and jeotgal.
  • Zip-top bags: Prevent leaks from market side dishes and dried goods.
  • Cash: Some market stalls are still cash-only.

Sokcho 1 night 2 days itinerary option: Sokcho Eye Ferris wheel

Right next to Sokcho Beach is the Sokcho Beach Ferris wheel (Sokcho Eye). Per its guide, the wheel has 36 cabins of 6 people each (up to 216 riders at once) with a ride of about 15 minutes. Note that there have been court-related reports about its operation and possible removal, so check whether it is still running on the day you visit. To pair the route with a neighboring city, see the Gangneung 1 night 2 days full guide.

Sokcho 1 night 2 days itinerary packing checklist

  • Windbreaker or light puffer: For wind at the beach and port.
  • Power bank: Market payments, maps, and photos drain phones fast.
  • Wet wipes: A must-have for market food.
  • Cooler bag and ice packs: For carrying Daepo Port and market food home.
  • Sunscreen: Beach reflection is strong even in winter.
  • Comfortable shoes: Walking distances at the market, beach, and port add up.
