Decide on the mood first to save time. The waterpark side covers Seorak Waterpia, Phoenix Blue Canyon and Alpensia Ocean 700. The traditional onsen side covers Cheoksan Hot Spring Resort, Osaek Carbonated Hot Spring and Donghae Boyang Hot Spring.

Gangwon hot spring spa visit course Seoraksan National Park nature view

Course 1: Sokcho Waterpia + Cheoksan Hot Spring 1N2D (all-season pick)

This is the most popular line among the four. The keywords are waterpark + traditional onsen + sea, all in one trip. It works well both for families and for visiting foreign friends.

Sokcho Seoraksan landscape, the starting point of the Gangwon hot spring spa visit course

DAY 1 — Seorak Waterpia core

  • Morning: arrive in Sokcho → hotel check-in
  • Lunch: Sokcho Jungang Market or Dongmyeong Port for raw fish / mulhoe
  • Afternoon to evening: Seorak Waterpia (indoor + outdoor spa)
  • Pricing notice (by season): day pass / afternoon pass / Night Spa / all-day pass

Waterpia hours and fees change often by season and weekday. As one published example, the silver-season standard rate set day pass adult at KRW 61,000 and Night Spa adult at KRW 41,000. For families, plan ahead: there is a notice about bringing supporting documents for accompanying infants, and the sauna locker rooms post a “no opposite-sex guardian for children aged 4 or older” rule.

DAY 2 — Cheoksan Hot Spring morning chill

  • Morning: Cheoksan Hot Spring Resort (sauna + outdoor bath)
  • Hours example: sauna 05:30–20:00, outdoor bath 08:30–19:00
  • Lunch then return

This course lets you experience both the waterpark side (Waterpia) and the traditional onsen side (Cheoksan) in one stay, so satisfaction is high. Even rain does not break the schedule. If you want to extend the same line down to Gangneung, check our Gangneung 1N2D core course.

Course 2: Yangyang Osaek Carbonated Hot Spring + Seorak drive (quiet healing line)

The keywords here are mountain drive + carbonated onsen + fatigue recovery. It suits people who prefer a real onsen mood over the noisy waterpark vibe.

Core route (day-trip version)

  • Morning: Hangyeryeong Pass and Seorak foothill drive
  • Afternoon: Osaek Carbonated Hot Spring (inside Osaek Greenyard Hotel)
  • Hours: 06:00–22:00 (last entry 21:00)
  • Notes: complex hot spring hotel inside Namseorak National Park, mineral-rich carbonated spring

You can confirm the full operating details at the Gangwon Tourism Foundation.

Easy add-on stops

  • Osaek Mineral Spring (carbonated water): noted as open 24 hours
  • Hangyeryeong viewpoint photo spot
  • Yangyang Jukdo Beach · Surfyy Beach (summer only)

Yangyang connects well with surfing and beach trips, so it is easy to extend the trip. To pair this with east-coast sunrise spots, the East Sea sunrise spots top 10 guide helps you build the route.

Course 3: Donghae Boyang Hot Spring + Mangsang Beach 1N2D (wellness concept)

This route combines Mangsang Beach with bathing at Donghae Boyang Hot Spring. Treat it as a leisure itinerary; “detox” or treatment benefits are not established by the venue name.

Donghae Mangsang coast scenery on the Gangwon hot spring spa visit course

DAY 1 — Check-in + Boyang Hot Spring

  • Afternoon: arrive in Donghae → check in at Convention Hotel
  • Hot spring hours: 06:30–21:30 (last entry 20:30)
  • Closing notice: shortened operation on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month for facility maintenance
  • Standard fee: KRW 10,000 adult / KRW 8,000 child

DAY 2 — Mangsang Beach walk + Donghae hot spots

According to a Korea Tourism Organization article, you can move safely from the hotel’s 2F lobby across an overbridge straight to Mangsang Beach. If you have time, add Chuam Beach and the Suspension Bridge, Dojaebigol Sky Valley, or Nongol Damgil at your own pace.

By public transport (foreigner-friendly tip)

  • Train: Mukho Station → city bus (12-4, 13-4, 31-3, 41, 43, 51) → get off at Mangsang Beach stop
  • Bus: Donghae Public Bus Terminal → use the same bus lines
  • Car: Yeongdong Expressway, Donghae IC → about 15 minutes

If you also want to add a Gangneung–Sokcho coastal drive, see the Gangneung Sokcho road trip guide for a cleaner route plan.

Course 4: Pyeongchang resort spa 1N2D (best for winter and rainy days)

The keywords are resort stay + waterpark + sauna + stable in snow or rain. Phoenix Park Blue Canyon and Alpensia Ocean 700 are the two main options.

Pyeongchang Alpensia Resort, a Gangwon hot spring spa visit course location

Option A — Phoenix Park Blue Canyon

  • Operating example: indoor waterpark / sauna 10:00–17:30 (last entry 17:00)
  • Fee example: adult KRW 50,000 / child KRW 42,500
  • Subject to season and weekday changes — check the official page before visiting

Option B — Alpensia Ocean 700

  • Seasonal hours example: 10:00–17:00
  • Regular closures and maintenance days are announced separately
  • Pairs well with the ski season

Indoor facilities can make the itinerary more flexible in rain, but heavy snow, storms and maintenance can still close facilities or disrupt access. Check the resort’s operating notice and road conditions before departure.

Gangwon hot spring spa packing checklist

TypeMust-haveOptional
Waterpark style (Waterpia · Blue Canyon · Ocean 700)Swimsuit / rashguard, waterproof pouch, small towelSwim cap, aqua shoes, waterproof phone case
Traditional onsen (Cheoksan · Osaek · Donghae Boyang)Personal toiletries, body lotion, hair tie (long hair)Shower slippers, insulated tumbler

Short, repeated soaking sessions tend to feel better than one long bath. Bring body lotion to avoid dry skin after the hot spring.

Five things foreigners get confused about (Korean onsen manners)

  • Shower before entering the bath — basic Korean bathing etiquette
  • Traditional onsens are usually no-swimsuit — gender-separated public baths
  • Waterpark style requires a swimsuit
  • Child accompaniment rules vary by venue — Waterpia bans opposite-sex guardians for children aged 4 or older
  • Hours change by season, weather and maintenance — both Waterpia and Blue Canyon post change-may-occur notices

If Korean sauna culture is new to you, learn the bathing order and basic etiquette first in our Korean jjimjilbang culture article.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q1. Where in Gangwon has the strongest real-onsen feel?

Sokcho Cheoksan Hot Spring Resort, Yangyang Osaek Carbonated Hot Spring (Osaek Greenyard Hotel) and Donghae Boyang Hot Spring lean strongly toward traditional onsen / public bath formats. If you want bathing-focused enjoyment rather than a waterpark vibe, prioritise these three.

Q2. Do I need to bring a swimsuit?

For waterpark-style spas a swimsuit is essentially required. Traditional onsen public baths are mostly used without a swimsuit and are gender-separated. Rules vary by facility, so check the notices before visiting.

Q3. Where can I go with kids?

For families, Seorak Waterpia and Pyeongchang resort waterparks are the easiest choices. Just remember locker-room and accompaniment rules vary by venue: Waterpia bans opposite-sex guardians for children aged 4 or older.

Q4. Does Donghae Boyang Hot Spring have closing days?

Per the official notice, the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month run on shortened hours for maintenance. Check operating hours once more before visiting.

Q5. Where can I check Phoenix Blue Canyon fees and hours?

Phoenix Park’s official “Operating hours and discount notice” page lists hours and fees by period. Variation is wide by season, so a check right before your visit is safest.

Q6. What is the easiest day-trip course?

From Seoul or the metro area, Sokcho day trip (Cheoksan Hot Spring + sea / market) or Yangyang Osaek (drive + Osaek Carbonated Hot Spring) tend to score highest. Both stay within roughly a three-hour drive, so they are easy to manage.
