The Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa course is the itinerary I most confidently recommend to first-time visitors. You can pair the UNESCO temple duo (Bulguksa and Seokguram) with the in-town royal tomb park (Daereungwon) and the cafe-lined Hwangnidan-gil street in a single overnight trip. Decide your arrival time and the day order writes itself, with hours, fares, transport and budget below.

Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa Course at a Glance

Gyeongju has two clusters: the eastern Toham-san temple side (Bulguksa, Seokguram) and the central downtown side (Daereungwon, Hwangnidan-gil), about 30 minutes apart by car. Pairing one cluster per day keeps the route clean.

The table below lays out the recommended day order by your arrival time. Afternoon arrivals start downtown; morning arrivals start with the temples to keep transfers easier.

Arrival Day 1 Day 2 Note
Afternoon (after 13:00) Daereungwon – Hwangnidan-gil dinner Bulguksa – Seokguram – Departure Best for non-drivers
Morning (before 11:00) Bulguksa – Seokguram – Downtown Daereungwon – Hwangnidan-gil – Departure Better with a car
Late night (after 20:00) Hwangnidan-gil night walk Daereungwon – Bulguksa – Seokguram 2 nights recommended

Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa Hours and Fees

Most Gyeongju sights are free or very affordable. Hours change slightly each year, so confirm the official notice before you go. The English page of the Korea Tourism Organization is a reliable starting point.

Place Hours Fee Notes
Bulguksa 09:00-18:00 (exit by 19:00) Free UNESCO, open year-round
Seokguram 09:00-18:00 (until 19:00) Free Glass-protected interior, no photos
Daereungwon 09:00-22:00 Free (Cheonmachong KRW 3,000) Night walking allowed
Hwangnidan-gil Always (shops 12:00-23:00) Free Cafe and craft street

* Winter hours (Nov-Feb) sometimes shorten by 30 minutes. Foreign visitors with passport or ARC may receive small discounts at some sites; ask the ticket booth.

Public Transport: Bus 10 plus Bus 12 Transfer

You do not need a car. The most asked question for the Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa course is “How do I get to Seokguram?”, and the answer is simple. Take Bus 10 (or 11) downtown to Bulguksa, then transfer to Bus 12 at the Bulguksa stop. One transfer covers everything.

Segment Bus Time Headway Service
Gyeongju Stn / Terminal – Bulguksa 10 or 11 35-45 min ~20 min 06:00-22:00
Bulguksa – Seokguram 12 15-20 min ~60 min 05:30-22:30
Hwangnidan-gil – Downtown stops 5 min walk – – –

Since 1 July 2025, Gyeongju city bus fares have been KRW 1,500 (adult), KRW 1,200 (youth) and KRW 800 (child). T-money or Cashbee gives a KRW 50 discount, and you can recharge at any convenience store. Photograph the Bus 12 timetable at Seokguram so you do not miss the once-an-hour return.

Day 1 Downtown: Daereungwon and Hwangnidan-gil

Downtown Gyeongju is a compact area where Daereungwon, Hwangnidan-gil, Cheomseongdae and Donggung Palace all sit within 10 minutes on foot. Daereungwon stays open until 22:00, so even an evening arrival leaves time for a full loop.

  • Daereungwon – Free entry (Cheonmachong tomb KRW 3,000). The 1.5 km loop takes about 40 minutes.
  • Cheomseongdae – Five minutes on foot, illuminated until 22:00 for a calm evening walk.
  • Hwangnidan-gil – Hwangnam-dong cafe and craft street; many shops open until 23:00.
  • Donggung & Wolji (Anapji) – The night-lit highlight of the trip. Adult ticket KRW 3,000.

For parking, try Daereungwon public lot (KRW 2,000 / 2 hr), Hwangnidan-gil Nodong public lot (KRW 1,000 / hr), then the temporary free lot near Hwangnidan-gil. The free lot fills fast, but on weekday afternoons before 16:00 it usually has space. For a longer route, see the Korean traditional market itinerary, which connects with Gyeongju.

Day 2 Mountain: Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa and Seokguram

Bulguksa and Seokguram were both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. They sit on Toham-san, about 3 km apart on foot (1 hour 20 minutes one way) or 9 km by road. Going up to Seokguram first and walking down to Bulguksa is the scenic option, but for non-drivers the safer route is Bulguksa, then Bus 12 up, then Bus 12 back down.

  • Bulguksa – Cheongun and Baegun stone bridges, plus the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas. Allow about 1 hour.
  • Seokguram – The Buddha is viewed through glass; no photos inside. The corridor loop takes 30 minutes.
  • Toham-san sunrise – In summer (Jun-Aug, around 04:30) the side path of the main hall offers a coastal sunrise view.

Temple etiquette is the most common question for foreign visitors. Take off your shoes when entering the main hall, and cover sleeveless tops or short skirts with a light cardigan. You do not need to bow, but loud phone calls or noisy shutter cameras in front of the Buddha are considered rude. To extend this trip eastward, pair it with the Korea sunrise spots on the east coast.

Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa Budget for Two

A realistic budget for two foreign travellers on the Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa course is about KRW 110,000 to 130,000 per person, food, lodging and transport included.

Item Total for 2 Note
Entry (Bulguksa, Seokguram, Daereungwon) KRW 0 +KRW 6,000 if Cheonmachong
City bus (4 rides) ~KRW 12,000 T-money KRW 50 discount
2 lunches + 1 dinner ~KRW 70,000 Hwangnidan-gil average
1 night mid-range hotel ~KRW 100,000 Within walking distance of downtown
Buffer (parking, snacks) ~KRW 20,000 –

FAQ

Can I do the Gyeongju 1 Night 2 Days Bulguksa course without a car?
Yes. Bus 10 or 11 downtown plus the Bus 12 transfer at Bulguksa covers every site.
Can I take photos at Seokguram?
The main Buddha is viewed through glass and photography is forbidden. The corridor and approach are fine.
Is the Daereungwon night walk safe?
Yes. Lights run until 22:00 and many families walk in the evening. Stepping onto the mounds for photos is forbidden.
Does the same route work in winter?
Yes. Temple hours shorten by 30 minutes, and the Toham-san road can ice over, so check the Bus 12 schedule once more.
Is there a foreigner discount?
At Cheonmachong and Donggung Palace there is sometimes a KRW 1,000 discount with a passport or ARC. Ask “Foreign discount?” at the counter.
