Build your Gunsan food route around identifiable stops: the Gunsan Seafood Center in Haemang-dong, the Modern History Museum district and Leesungdang on Jungang-ro. Save each actual shop address before setting off. This guide combines a seafood meal, a heritage walk and a bakery or snack stop; walking time depends on the shops you choose.

Plan the Route Before You Plan the Meal

Use three planning areas: the seafood center in Haemang-dong, restaurants near the Modern History Museum, and bakeries and snack shops around Jungang-ro and Wolmyeong-dong. Plot the chosen addresses on the city tourism map. These are planning areas, not a verified set of named noodle or squid-fritter alleys.

Sequence works best as: seafood lunch → modern-architecture walk → afternoon snack alley → jjamppong dinner. From the Seoul region, Gunsan is far enough that the round trip eats most of the day, so first-time visitors are better off staying overnight and spreading the loop across two days.

The Seafood Backbone: From Fish Market to Raw-Fish Centers

For a precise seafood-market pin, use Gunsan Seafood Center, 216 Naehang 2-gil. Confirm the chosen stall’s hours and whether a restaurant will prepare your purchase. Ask separately about fish price, weight, preparation and table-setting charges before buying; there is no verified market-wide KRW 5,000–10,000 per-portion fee or universal 06:00–14:00 schedule.

Clear tank water and customer traffic alone do not establish food safety. Check the seller’s handling and refrigeration, and ask whether seafood is fresh or frozen. Korea’s Fisheries Safety Information Service describes spring as the season for roe-bearing female blue crabs and autumn for meatier males; individual condition and that day’s catch still vary.

If you prefer clam kalguksu to raw fish, choose a currently operating restaurant and check its menu and address. A distinct “Haemanggul clam noodle alley,” its shop count and a common bowl price could not be confirmed from the official tourism material; do not use that name alone as a navigation pin.

  • Gunsan Seafood Center — 216 Naehang 2-gil; check individual stall hours
  • Kalguksu option — save a confirmed restaurant address and current menu
  • Seafood restaurant — agree on preparation and table-setting charges before buying fish

Bakery and Snack Stops: Leesungdang and Nearby Shops

Leesungdang, established in 1945, is a useful fixed bakery stop. For squid fritters or tteokbokki, choose a real shop with a current menu. The claimed Wolmyeong-dong squid-fritter alley with five or six tents and KRW 500–1,000 pieces was not verified; snack availability and prices are shop-specific.

Leesungdang at 177 Jungang-ro is known for red-bean and vegetable buns. Check current prices, ingredients and monthly closure notices with the bakery; do not budget on the old KRW 1,500 figure. Allow for a queue and changing stock instead of assuming a particular arrival time guarantees availability or no wait.

  • Snack shop — choose an operating shop around your walking route
  • Leesungdang — 177 Jungang-ro; check prices, closure days and stock
  • Optional second snack — add a bakery or stall only after checking its current menu and location

A Pin Plan That Pairs Food with the Modern History Walk

Link the Shinheung-dong Japanese-style House (Hirotsu House), former Gunsan Customs and the Modern History Museum as the central heritage walk. The March 1st Movement Centennial Memorial is at 29 Yeongmyeong-gil in Guam-dong, outside this compact loop; plan a separate transfer rather than describing all four as 15 minutes apart.

Have seafood for lunch, take the central heritage walk and choose Leesungdang or an identified snack shop for the afternoon. A jjamppong restaurant can be the dinner stop, but check its menu, break time and last order; red and white seafood noodle soups are not both available everywhere.

  1. 10:00 — Visit Gunsan Seafood Center (example time); buy live fish or dried goods
  2. 11:30 — Raw-fish lunch (sashimi or blue-crab stew)
  3. 13:00 — Modern history walk (Hirotsu House, Gunsan Customs)
  4. 15:00 — Leesungdang or the snack shop you selected (example time)
  5. 18:30 — Dinner at a jjamppong shop near the modern history quarter

Day-trippers can pick one stop in the morning and one in the afternoon and still eat well. To reduce transfers, lock in Gunsan Seafood Center and Leesungdang as fixed pins and add the rest as time allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is parking available at Naehang Fish Market?

Check the parking entrance, tariff and available spaces for the actual seafood center or restaurant. Weekend demand and road traffic vary, so do not rely on a guaranteed ten-minute taxi ride from the terminal. Use the exact destination address in your route app.

Can I reserve at Lee Sung Dang?

The bakery has an official online ordering site, so “walk-in only” is too broad. Online delivery orders and an in-store pickup reservation are different services: ask the bakery whether your desired product and pickup date can be reserved. For a walk-in visit, check closure notices and allow for queues or sellouts.

When is blue crab in season?

Spring is known for female blue crab with roe; autumn for the meat of male blue crab. Males do not carry roe. Ask about that day’s origin, fresh or frozen status and price rather than assuming every crab in a stated month is full of meat.
