Korea Summer Beaches: Busan vs Gangwon vs Jeju Guide

Looking for the best Korea summer beaches but torn between Busan, Gangwon, and Jeju? Of Korea’s roughly 700 beaches, about 250 officially open each summer. We picked nine standout spots — three per region — that foreign travelers can navigate easily for family swims, couple dates, surfing, or snorkeling. Water temperature, crowds, transport, and cost are compared side by side so you can decide in five minutes.

Korea summer beaches at a glance (Busan vs Gangwon vs Jeju)

Each region has a clear character. Busan offers urban infrastructure, night views, and food. Gangwon (East Sea) wins on water clarity, sunrises, and mountain pairings. Jeju delivers emerald water and volcanic scenery. There is no single right answer — only the right answer for your trip.

RegionTop beachesWater temp (Jul-Aug)VibeForeigner accessAvg 1 night

Gangwon (East Sea)Gyeongpo, Sokcho, Naksan20-24°CClear water, sunrise, mountains3+/5 (KTX, intercity bus)KRW 90k-200k
JejuHyeopjae, Hamdeok, Jungmun Saekdal24-27°CEmerald water, surfing4/5 (Low-cost air + rental car)KRW 120k-300k

The first thing to check when picking a beach is water temperature and waves. The East Sea sits around 20°C until early July, which can feel cold for kids and seniors. The South Sea and Jeju cross 25°C from mid-July, much friendlier for swimming. For surfing, head to Jungmun in Jeju; for safe family swims, Hyeopjae or Haeundae; for sunrise and camping, Naksan in Gangwon.

Korea summer beaches in Busan — top 3 (city, night, food)

Korea summer beaches Busan Haeundae — sandy shore and hotel skyline

Busan is the easiest region for foreign visitors thanks to KTX and subway coverage. Haeundae is reachable from Busan Station via one subway transfer in about 50 minutes; Gwangalli takes about 40. Night views, food, and 24-hour cafes pack a lot into a short trip.

1) Haeundae Beach — the safest default

About 1.5 km long and 30-50 m wide. Fine sand and a gentle slope make it safe for children. During the official July-August opening, around 90 lifeguards are stationed on duty, and showers, lockers, and tube rentals all sit within 200 m of the sand. The best night-view angle is from Dongbaek Island near The Bay 101.

  • Address 264 Haeundaehaebyeon-ro, Haeundae-gu, Busan
  • Subway Line 2 Haeundae Station, Exit 5, 8 min walk
  • Family 5/5 / Couple 4/5 / Surf 2/5 (move to Songjeong)
  • Food Haeundae Market milmyeon and dwaeji-gukbap; Mipo raw-fish row

2) Gwangalli Beach — the answer for Gwangan Bridge night views

Less crowded than Haeundae, with cafes, bars, and old-school sashimi shops lined right behind the sand. The Gwangan Bridge drone show runs on Saturday evenings (per the official Busan City schedule), so almost every July-August Saturday delivers one. Calm waves make it a good place to start with SUP and paddleboards.

  • Address 219 Gwanganhaebyeon-ro, Suyeong-gu, Busan
  • Subway Line 2 Gwangan Station, Exit 3 or 5, 10 min walk
  • Family 4/5 / Couple 5/5 / Surf 3/5
  • Tip Grab a spot before sunset (around 7 pm); drone show starts at 9 pm

3) Songjeong Beach — Busan’s surf-school hub

Fifteen minutes by car from Haeundae. The 1.2 km beach has coarser sand and steady waves, making it Busan’s most active surf spot. Two-hour lessons typically run KRW 70k-90k, and English-speaking instructors are increasingly common.

Korea summer beaches in Gangwon — top 3 (clear water, sunrise, camping)

Korea summer beaches Gangwon Gyeongpo — wide sand and East Sea

The East Sea drops off faster than Busan but ranks higher on water quality. Most beaches in this region clear the Ministry of Environment’s swimwater quality test. If you want sunrises, camping, and bike paths in one trip, Gangwon is the answer.

1) Gyeongpo Beach (Gangneung) — the most familiar East Sea pick

About 1.8 km long and 80 m wide, with plenty of room for tents and umbrellas. You can pair it with the Gyeongpo Lake walking trail for a 30-minute bike loop. From KTX Gangneung Station, city buses 202 and 202-1 take 25 minutes.

  • Address 514 Changhae-ro, Gangneung, Gangwon
  • Family 4/5 / Couple 4/5 / Sunrise 5/5
  • Food Chodang Tofu Village (15 min walk); Anmok Coffee Street (10 min by car)

2) Sokcho Beach — base camp for Seoraksan

The best beach for pairing with a Seoraksan cable car or Ulsanbawi Rock day. The Seorak ridgeline visible from the sand makes for strong photo backdrops. It is a 5-minute walk from Sokcho intercity bus terminal, so you can arrive without a car.

3) Naksan Beach (Yangyang) — sunrise and surf in one stop

At 4 km, this is one of the longest beaches on the East Sea. Yangyang has become Korea’s surfing capital, with Jukdo and Ingu beaches nearby adding lesson options. Sunrise from Uisangdae Pavilion at Naksansa Temple delivers the most reliable composition along the East Sea.

Korea summer beaches in Jeju — top 3 (emerald water, surf, snorkeling)

Korea summer beaches Jeju Hyeopjae — emerald water and Biyangdo island

Jeju’s August water averages above 26°C, the warmest in Korea. Just note that July to September can fall in the typhoon belt — check the Korea Meteorological Administration marine forecast within 24 hours of departure.

1) Hyeopjae Beach — the postcard view of Biyangdo

Shallow water and fine white sand make this the top family choice. Biyangdo Island sits right offshore for striking compositions. The sand connects with neighboring Geumneung Beach, so you can walk both in one visit.

  • Address 2497-1 Hyeopjae-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju City
  • From airport About 50 min by car (via Route 1131)
  • Family 5/5 / Snorkel 4/5 / Sunset 4/5

2) Hamdeok Beach — the closest beach to Jeju Airport

Twenty-five minutes by car from Jeju Airport, ideal for short itineraries and layover travelers. A long stretch of one-meter-deep water suits children’s swimming, and you can pair it with the Seoubong walking trail.

3) Jungmun Saekdal Beach — Jeju’s surf capital

On Jeju’s southern coast. Wave heights of 1-1.5 m are consistent enough that surf schools cluster here. Hotels and restaurants in Jungmun Tourist Complex sit nearby, so families and surfers can split the day.

Practical tips for foreign travelers

Korean beaches officially open from late June or early July through the end of August. Outside that window, lifeguards are not on duty and swimming is not advised. Korea Tourism Organization’s English site (english.visitkorea.or.kr) lists each region’s open dates in English.

  • Transport Busan: subway and KTX. Gangwon: KTX Gangneung Line and intercity bus. Jeju: low-cost flight plus rental car.
  • Booking First and second weeks of August sell out by June. Mid-July weekdays or after the third week of August offer better value.
  • Safety No swimming after drinking; watch for rip-current warning signs.
  • Gear Rashguards and aqua shoes are sold at convenience stores near beaches (KRW 10k-30k).
  • Payment Beach stalls prefer cash; major restaurants and cafes accept cards and KakaoPay.
