If you’re planning a Korea island travel itinerary, start with these three: Udo (Jeju), Oedo Botania (Geoje), and Namhae. Each destination in this Korea island travel guide has a completely different vibe — and a different way to get there. Here’s what you need to know before you book.

Quick summary
Udo is 15 minutes by ferry from Seongsan or Jongdal Port (Jeju) — small enough to cover in a day.
Oedo Botania is only reachable by cruise boat, with a strictly limited 2-hour stay on the island.
Namhae is connected by bridge — no ferry needed — and rewards you with a full 1-night-2-day loop.

Korea Island Travel Guide — Udo: The Island Inside an Island

Udo sits just off Jeju’s eastern tip. Ferries depart from Seongsan Port and Jongdal Port and take about 15 minutes. There are two docks on Udo — Cheonjin Port and Haumokdong Port. You’ll need to show your passport or Alien Registration Card before boarding and fill out a boarding form.

Can you bring a rental car to Udo?
Udo has enforced vehicle restrictions for years to reduce congestion. From August 2025, a one-year partial relaxation was reported (eco-friendly rentals and chartered buses under certain conditions). Confirm the current rules before your trip — they can change with little notice.

Korea Island Travel Guide Day Trip 1 — Udo in One Day (6–7 Hours)

Base yourself at Cheonjin Port, where most rental shops are clustered.

  1. Pick up an e-bike, bicycle, or hop on the island shuttle at Cheonjin Port
  2. Seobinbaeksa (Udo coral sand beach) — the island’s most photographed spot
  3. Udobong peak (Soemeoori Oreum) — panoramic views across Jeju
  4. Lunch and break at the beach café strip
  5. One more beach (Hagosudong) before heading back to the port

Budget estimate (per person)
Round-trip ferry (includes park entry): roughly 10,000–15,000 KRW. Bike rental and food: 40,000–80,000 KRW depending on season and transport choice.

Udo Overnight Stay — 1 Night 2 Days

Udo is 3.8 km long with a 17 km coastline — compact enough that an overnight stay feels genuinely relaxing rather than rushed.

  • Day 1: Afternoon arrival → beach walk → check in to island guesthouse → stargazing
  • Day 2: Early morning viewpoint → café brunch → leave before noon

Common mistakes foreign visitors make on Udo

  • No ID: You cannot board without showing your passport or ARC.
  • Ignoring weather: Ferries can be suspended due to wind or waves.
  • Overpacking the schedule: Three or four key spots is plenty for a day trip.

Korea Island Travel Guide — Oedo Botania: Garden Island by Cruise

Admission and cruise fares are sold separately, though most operators bundle them at the ticket counter. Book ahead on weekends — popular departures sell out.

Day Trip 3 — Oedo Botania Cruise Day Itinerary

  1. Arrive at the port 20–30 minutes before departure — show your passport or ARC
  2. Haegeum-gang scenic cruise → land on Oedo
  3. Spend ~2 hours on the island (photo spots → viewpoint → café)
  4. Return to Geoje — afternoon at Windy Hill (Baram-ui Eondeok) and Sinseon Rock

What foreign visitors often miss at Oedo

  • ID requirement: Every cruise operator checks ID at boarding.
  • Weather cancellations: High waves can prevent docking with no warning.
  • Time crunch: Prioritize photo spots first — the café can wait.

Korea Island Travel Guide — Namhae: Road-Trip Island, No Ferry Required

Korea island travel guide Namhae coastal view

Namhae stands out in any Korea island travel guide because you arrive by road, not boat. It’s connected via Namhae Bridge and Changseon-Samcheonpo Bridge. One loop packs three completely different landscapes: a European-style village, terraced rice fields, and a mountain-top temple.

Day Trip 4 — Namhae Top 3 Spots

Namhae 1 Night 2 Days — Foreign Traveler Itinerary

  • Day 1 — Arrive → German Village stroll + café → sunset coastal drive → sea-view accommodation
  • Day 2 — Early morning Boriam Temple → Gacheon Daraengi Village walk (~1 hour) → head home

Intercity buses from Seoul (Nambu Terminal) reach Namhae, but local bus frequency is low — build in extra buffer time. Planning a broader southern Korea loop? Pair this with the Jeju oreum hiking guide or the Korea cherry blossom spots guide.

Two Ways to Combine All Three Islands in One Trip

Option 1 — First Korea trip (8 days)

  • Days 1–2: Jeju (Udo day trip included)
  • Day 3: Fly Jeju → Busan
  • Day 4: Geoje — Oedo Botania cruise
  • Days 5–6: Namhae 1 night 2 days
  • Days 7–8: Busan / Seoul wrap-up

Option 2 — Expats based in Korea (3 weekends)

  • Weekend 1: Fly to Jeju — Udo day trip
  • Weekend 2: Busan base → Geoje Oedo day trip
  • Weekend 3: Namhae 1 night 2 days

Korea Island Travel Checklist for Foreign Visitors

  • Passport or ARC — Required for Udo ferry boarding and Oedo cruise check-in.
  • Weather check — Both Udo and Oedo can cancel sailings due to wind or waves.
  • Buffer time — Ports get crowded on weekends. Aim for 30 minutes before departure.
  • Walking shoes — Oedo and Boriam Temple have steep stairs and slopes.
  • Small cash — Boriam entry and some cruise ticket counters are cash-only.

Korea Island Travel Guide — FAQ

Is Udo worth a day trip from Jeju?
Yes. The ferry takes 15 minutes from Seongsan or Jongdal Port and the island is compact — a day is enough to hit the highlights.
Do I need ID to board the Udo ferry?
Yes. Bring your passport or Alien Registration Card. You’ll also fill out a boarding form at the terminal.
Can I bring a rental car to Udo?
Vehicle rules have been in flux. A partial relaxation was reported from August 2025, but check current regulations before assuming you can drive on.
Can I reach Oedo Botania without a cruise?
No — Oedo is only accessible by licensed cruise boat. Most packages include Haegeum-gang and limit island time to around 2 hours.
Is Namhae hard to visit without a car?
Buses connect Namhae’s main villages but schedules are infrequent. Factor in waiting time or hire a car for the day.
Best two spots in Namhae for a short visit?
German Village plus Daraengi Village for first-timers. Swap German Village for Boriam Temple if dramatic scenery is your priority.
