Autumn Foliage Travel in Korea: Seoraksan vs Naejangsan Complete Guide

Autumn foliage travel in Korea begins with picking the right peak window for Seoraksan and Naejangsan. As fall arrives, the foliage line moves south across the peninsula over roughly one month — Seoraksan peaks from late September to mid-October, while Naejangsan peaks from late October to early November. This autumn foliage travel guide covers the cable car and hiking courses on both mountains, the Sokcho and Jeongeup connecting routes, lodging booking timing, and weekday crowd-avoidance tips for the real trip.

Seoraksan Course for Autumn Foliage Travel: Gwongeumseong Cable Car and Daecheongbong Hike

Seoraksan National Park stretches across Sokcho, Goseong, and Inje in Gangwon Province. In autumn, the Gwongeumseong, Biseondae, and Ulsanbawi areas turn red, orange, and gold. The easiest entry is the Gwongeumseong cable car from the Seorak-dong entrance, which lifts you to 700 m in about five minutes for a panoramic view of foliage and granite cliffs. For a short and light autumn foliage travel day, the cable car plus a loop around Sinheungsa Temple is a comfortable pick.

For a real hike, consider Osaek to Daecheongbong (about five hours one way, 1,300 m elevation gain) or the Seorak-dong–Biseondae–Huiungak–Daecheongbong traverse (eight to ten hours). During peak season, entry windows are shorter (typically 3 a.m. to noon), so check the Korea National Park Service reservation system in advance. For lodging, base yourself in central Sokcho or the Seorak-dong cluster so you can combine mountain hiking with Sokcho Beach and the Abai Village area on the East Coast.

Naejangsan Course for Autumn Foliage Travel: Maple Tunnel and Cable Car Viewpoint

Naejangsan in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do, earned its nickname “Maple Mountain” thanks to a high concentration of maple trees that deepen the autumn color. The 1.2 km path from the Iljumun gate to Naejangsa Temple forms a famous maple tunnel, so even visitors who skip the summit can experience peak foliage on a flat walk. For autumn foliage travel with family or older companions, this flat tunnel route is the easiest place to start.

If you want a higher viewpoint, take the Naejangsan cable car to the mid-station of Yeonjabong for a ridge-level look at the foliage, or try the Seoraebong–Bulchulbong ridge route (about three hours one way). Check operating hours and the official peak forecast at the Korea Tourism Organization. Many travelers extend the trip into a two-day southern autumn foliage travel route by adding the Damyang Metasequoia Road (30 minutes by car) and Sunchang Gangcheonsan Mountain (about an hour away).

If you want to visit both mountains in one season, use the peak timing gap to your advantage. Visit Seoraksan in the first week of October and Naejangsan in the first week of November to complete two rounds of autumn foliage travel in a single year. Pick Seoraksan if you want mountain hiking combined with the East Sea, and Naejangsan if you prefer a quieter maple tunnel paired with southern Korean cuisine. Autumn Foliage Travel Practical Tips: Layers, Booking, and Transport

  • Layering: The diurnal temperature swing easily exceeds 10°C. A thin long sleeve + fleece + windbreaker three-layer system works best.
  • Lodging: Peak weekends are often fully booked two to three weeks out. Confirm at least three weeks ahead, and choose a weekday night if possible.
  • Peak forecast: The peak shifts by one to two weeks each year. Re-check the Korea Meteorological Administration foliage forecast and KNPS notices about a week before departure.
  • Transport: For Seoraksan, the Dong Seoul–Sokcho intercity bus is about 2 hours 30 minutes. For Naejangsan, the Seoul–Jeongeup KTX is about 1 hour 50 minutes. Park-and-ride lots fill after 7 a.m. on weekends, so public transport is the safer plan.
  • Gear: Hiking boots or ankle-supporting sneakers, at least 1 L of water, trail snacks (nuts, chocolate), a hat, and sunglasses.

Autumn Foliage Travel in One Line

Seoraksan delivers grand mountain foliage from late September to mid-October, while Naejangsan delivers a dense maple tunnel from late October to early November. Because the peaks are about a month apart, plenty of travelers visit both in the same year. Choose weekdays and early-morning entries, and lock in lodging at least three weeks ahead — those two moves alone will lift the satisfaction of your autumn foliage travel sharply.
